Pictures of cancelled Zool 3D game surfaces

Recently on the discord interwebs some pictures of a cancelled Zool 3D game has begun to surface.

This Zool was developed by Data Design Interactive and some months ago a lot of Data Design Interactive hdds were sold (somewhere, ebay?) so these pictures most likely comes from that batch.

Eventually this Zool 3D game was cancelled and instead ended up into 4 different Wii/PS2/PC games: Ninjabread Man, Anubis, Trixie in Toyland and Rock n Roll Adventures.

SA-1 demonstration cartridge dumped for Snes

"On March, Forest of Illusion, a Twitter account designed for "Preserving Nintendo's History", posted a tweet about a SA-1 demonstration cartridge being available on eBay for acquiring. The cartridge was undumped at that time and shown two mysterious demos, which the first demo suggested a comparison between S-CPU (SNES CPU) and C-CPU (SA-1 CPU) and another demo that suggested a software SA-1 graphics rotation system.

l was pretty sad that there was no dump available and no hopes of the cartridge getting acquired: after all, it was being sold by a pretty high amount (if I remember correctly, the initial price was around $4,200). However.... I got the great news that one of my Patrons (which preferred to stay anonymous) acquired the cartridge and he sent it to Bob (from RetroRGB) to dump it and send a copy of the ROM for me. When I initially saw the DM Bob sent it to me... I couldn't believe it.

The demo that I was looking for pretty much over 7 years, since the day I heard about its existence on SNES Central... And now it was finally dumped and I could analyze & play it! It's certainly one of most grateful surprises I ever got!"

Amiga Documents - A interesting twitter account and site that keeps track of the strange legal history of the Amiga brand in court up until now

"Borrowing from the "So the world may know" religious quote that was the official title of the amiga.com home page between May 2000 and March 2005, this site aims to expose and preserve events and relationships involving a multitude of companies that held or touched the Amiga torch over the years, including the recurrent legal trolls and snake oil salesmen"

Unreleased Scooby-Doo Night of 100 Frights prototype dumped for Psx

"The original vision for the unreleased PlayStation game Scooby-Doo: Night of 100 Frights. It would eventually be released on PS2, GC, and Xbox."

Shogihax - Remote Code Execution on Nintendo 64 through Morita Shogi 64 internal modem by ecturt

Morita Shogi 64 is a game that has a built-in RJ-11 Modem Connection port with which players were able to connect to (now defunct) servers to play against other players all around Japan.

ecturt writes:

"Instead of shelling out money for a flashcard (which have inflated prices since they are marketed for pirating games), I decided to invest some time systematically going through other potential methods of running arbitrary code.
I eventually stumbled upon Morita Shogi 64, the only official N64 game to include a modem built-into the cartridge to support its unique online-play functionality.

The ability to easily transfer arbitrary data to the game through this interface made it an attractive target to analyse. Note that Nintendo also produced a stand-alone modem cartridge which allows the 2 supported N64DD games to connect to the internet (Randnet and Mario Artist: Communication Kit), but since the N64DD was cancelled after only 10 games were released for it in Japan it's very rare and expensive, making it a less convenient choice than Morita Shogi 64."

Jessie Jaeger in Cleopatra's Curse - New commercial game for Pc-Engine CD

"A new metroidvania-style game for the Turbografx Super CD! Explore Cleopatra's Crypt to find the pieces of her sarcophagus, and save your grandpa from her curse! "

Compatibility
Works on all Turbo Duo, PC Engine Duo, and Duo-R consoles. Requires a Super System 3.0 Card or Arcade Card to run on Turbografx-16 CD or PC Engine CD consoles."

PSXFunkin - Friday Night Funkin' ported to Playstation 1

"Friday Night Funkin' is a open-source donationware rhythm game. Developed by a team of four Newgrounds users, the game has a play style that is similar to Dance Dance Revolution and PaRappa the Rapper, with an aesthetic reminiscent of Flash games popular in the early-to-mid 2000s."

Sega's rare Mega Terminal spotted on twitter

"The Mega Terminal (MEGA ターミナル) is a Japan-only accessory for the Sega Mega Drive. It is exceptionally rare and has not been widely documented. Like the Sega Mega Modem, the device connects to the back of a Mega Drive through the third DE-9 expansion port; consequently, it will only connect to a Model 1 Mega Drive. The device can link up to an ISDN telephone line and transmit (or receive) data at a rate of 1200-2400bps. As ISDN lines only charged by the number of packets transmitted rather than the length of time connected it could often work out cheaper to use ISDN than a standard line. This was especially true in a game such as Go, which took a long time between moves, whilst transmitting little data. ISDN lines also allowed a telephone to still work whilst using the line for data, whereas a standard line would be tied up by the use of the Sega Mega Modem. NullDC and Dreamcast emulation on PSP in 2021 (it's slow but interesting)

Xiro on the psp discord writes:

"All started when I saw the old youtube video online. It was like December and I was working on the first implementation of the dynarec for desmume. Then after the Christmas break I started to search the source code of nullDC. I became really interested into it because I saw an opportunity to improve my skills, so once I had found the code on GitHub I've literally spent the whole night to try compiling it. The first bootable version was tremendously slow (it used the interpreter and to boot it needed almost an entire minute just to show the Dreamcast startup). After talking with Pierre L, I decided to talk about this with hlide (the developer who helped skpm to build the dynarec). With hlide, we've fixed a lot of bugs and then finally here we are to now"

How to use

The Eye of Typhoon port/revamp from 3DO to Neogeo

"Its release was limited to PC CD-Rom and 3DO versions in 1996, and on the sole Korean market.

As for the prototype that was initially developed for the Neo.Geo, it was never published"

The aim of The Eye of Typhoon [ Tsunami Edition / Saiki ] project is to bring this good old arcade production from the first half of the 90s back to the Neo.Geo!! the plateform for which it was originally intended! ;-)

However, it is not a direct port of the 3DO and PC versions, but rather a complete overhaul based on the graphics and sound material designed by Viccom."

Sabre470's extensive research and gathering of PC-FXGA homebrew

Extensive article on identifying playstation cracktro soundtracks by Gregg Kennedy

"A user in the Nectarine Discord brought an interesting question recently: they had some Youtube videos of cracktros from Playstation games, and wanted to know if anyone could identify their soundtracks. For those unaware, a “cracktro” is a combination of a “crack” (piracy) and an “intro” (demoscene) – it’s a little movie or menu that plays at the start of a hacked / pirated game, usually with credits and simple visual effects. It’s a calling card from the group who helped pirate the game, often with “greetz” to the supplier of the disc image, the coder who cracked it, the BBS or site who re-hosted the result, etc."

7 Days Salvation - The interesting case of the Chinese survival horror game (PC/Dingoo/Symbian)

This is a game that is really interesting since there are not many like it coming out of China, specially with that sweet sweet 90's survival horror feel to it.

Well after laying under the radar for a decade and a half it seems people are finally giving it some love, first there is a fan translation project announced over at:

http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=32267.0

and over at reddit somebody is supposedly doing a remake of it using the unreal engine: https://www.reddit.com/r/7DaysSalvation/

"7 Days Salvation was a symbian/dingoo survival horror game with Silent Hill vibes to it developed & published by Dingoo Games. They stopped the development of the English PC version somewhere in 2007. In early 2008 they abandoned Chinese PC version and stopped updating English version for mobiles."

"The full game was published in Chinese on the symbian market in 2009 which contains the whole game (7 days). The Dingoo a320 device was sold with an incomplete version of the game that has full 5 days in english. There's also a English demo version for symbian and PC that usually contains the first days."

And thanks to the new N-gage/Symbian EKA2L1 emulator we can now also play the Symbian version.

If the source code is ever released it would have been a perfect game to port to Saturn/Psx/Ps2/Dc.

Hypernoid Neo Geo AES update

"The Neo Geo AES port of Hypernoid now has a Game Options menu with settings for Continues,  Difficulty, How-To-Play display and Controller type. Also, optional 'Memory Card Load / Save' settings can be adjusted.  Because the Neo Geo AES Home System does not have internal memory (unlike the MVS system) the 'Top 10 Ranking' list and the 'Game Options' can now be saved to and loaded from Memory Card. Additionally, the Score, Stage Number and Credits of the last completed stage can be saved after Game Over to Memory Card."

Saturn emulation on PSP in the year 2021 (from piss slow to slightly playable)

"let's be clear, this is a large improvement over the Yabause 0.9.10 builds that were floating around the internet before this one was (re-)discovered. But that does not mean you will be able to play Sega Saturn games on your PSP. Or at least, not easily."

MVS64 - A NeoGeo emulator for Nintendo 64

Super Robot Taisen for Gamecube fan translation released

RayStorm Tokyo Game Show disc uploaded to Archive.org

"This is a .bin rip of a version of RayStorm for the PS1 that was assumedly available at the Tokyo Game Show 1997. This is most likely a "Hong Kong Silver Disc," AKA a clone made in Hong Kong that was printed on a normal-looking CD-ROM disc. It's unknown exactly which TGS it was available at that year, but it's safe to assume that it was at the Spring show.
The rip will play on emulators with a Japanese PS1 BIOS. The physical disc will not launch on a Japanese PS2 SCPH-70000. It requires a disc swap mod to play on real hardware"

Doubutsu Bancha later came out for the Gamecube in 2002 in Japan published by Nintendo. Video above of the ms-dos port.

Alien Odyssey is a game made by Argonaut Games (Star Fox) and released for ms-dos, here is the source code for the Saturn version, it was released anonymously on discord, at this stage it will need some extra work (devkit maybe) to see if it can be built to work.

Photo CD based games that you can play on your Sega Saturn if you have a mpeg/vcd card

Yes believe it or not there were some games made using the Photo CD technology and they will run on anything that supports it so not only a saturn mpeg card will run them but a Pc-Fx will also natively run them or a Cd32/Cdi with a mpeg card will also run them, keep in mind that the Pal Saturn mpeg card needs the Photo CD Operator disc while the other cards runs the Photo CDs without it.

ScummVM adds Blazing Dragons with mouse hack support

Believe it or not the Saturn and Psx versions of this game did not support the mouse and this game oddly did not get a PC port so this is the best way to play it now.

GG Aleste 3 rom extracted from Sega’s Game Gear Micro

"This is the new GG Aleste 3 game extracted from the Game Gear Micro. However, in its current state it is unplayable due to protections in place after M2 got burned working with another individual who sold repro Darius carts online after helping them port it to the Mega Drive mini.

Hopefully someone is able to reverse engineer the protections and/or possible new mapper in this game and make it playable for everyone else."

Preserve CD-i is dumping a lot of obscure Philips CD-i discs on archive.org

"Holy cow, what a beautiful sight! Another rich batch of goodies from the godfather of CD-i himself, Blazers.

Well there's a lot to unpack in this photo, let's chat! First and foremost we have a plethora of Japanese releases, including the neat as heck Japan exclusive Horoscope

You might also notice the Yuki Saito "Anniversary" CD-i Ready disc - another Japanese exclusive.

Additionally a big handful of rare Euro goodies! Shaolin's Road, Alfapet, and Foqus (which has a mastering quirk I'm still exploring how to get a proper dump out of).

Plunderball, oh my! (more on that soon). Very soon.

And right on top, one of the rarest Tandy VIS titles - now preserved!

The roms are ready to be played (with a few in "coming soon" status) onto archive.org.
I took cover scans of most everything, so they will eventually make their way up there too when my busy busy with work life slows down.

All praise to Blazers, ramen. Thank you for culturally appropriating all of Japan's CD-i titles for the enjoyment of all."

OptiDoom, a 3DO port/enhancement of Doom based on the original released source code

English translation of 3DO exclusive SRPG Battle Blues released

"Battle Blues (배틀 블루스) is a Strategy Role-Playing Game developed by Shin's Entertainment (A.K.A. SHIN'S DECO) in collaboration with LG Electronics in 1996 who also helped publish the game.

Similar to Panasonic in the West, LG sold its own 3DO consoles in the Korean market. They went on to produce 3 consoles: the Goldstar 3DO Alive which was also sold in Europe without the "Alive" branding, the Goldstar 3DO Alive II which was exclusive to Korea as well as the extremely rare LG 3DO Alive II (essentially just a variant on the Alive II with the LG logo after the company was renamed from "Lucky-Goldstar" to "LG").

Battle Blues was never localized for a western audience as the 3DO did not sell well in the West, let alone in Korea."
